Non-alcoholic Hugo Spritz Mocktail For All Your Celebrations

The Hugo Spritz took social media by storm this past year and we are big fans! The world was waiting for something new to obsess over, because the good old ‘aperol’ spritz was getting kind of tired. 

The Hugo was invented in Italy, but gained popularity in Germany and Austria. Its hallmark flavour pairs elderflower and mint with crisp sparkling wine. Elderflower is a perfect flavour enhancer for anyone that likes floral, but doesn’t like the overly perfumed notes of lilac or rose. Elderflower bushes are common in the U.K. during spring and so much so that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry flavoured their official wedding cake with it. If it has royal approval, it’s good enough for us! 

Our non-alcoholic version of this cocktail stars a German-produced premium non-alcoholic sparkling white called Wander + Found Sparkling Cuvee Blanc. Wander + Found is produced in Germany in the famous wine region called the Rhinegau. The winery has been making precise non-alcoholic wines for over a decade and it’s obvious they have honed their skills at dealcoholization. They use premium grapes grown in their vineyards and use the skills of a highly-specialised winemaker to develop their signature non-alcoholic wines. 

The Wander + Found Sparkling Cuvee Blanc has crisp and tart notes of green apple, lime and fresh minerality, which makes this complex and elegant bubbly a perfect match for the floral and herbal ingredients. You can find Wander + Found online in both Canada and the U.S.

Ingredients for one: 

1 oz elderflower syrup

¼ oz lime juice (just a touch!)

4-5 mint leaves

2 oz club soda, chilled

3 oz Wander + Found Sparkling Cuvee, chilled

Preparation: 

  1. Add syrup and lime juice to the bottom of a stemless wine glass

  2. Put the mint leaves in the palm of your hand and clap your hands together to ‘spank’ the mint; tear leaves in half and add to the glass

  3. Stir gently to combine

  4. Add ice

  5. Add club soda and stir gently again

  6. Top with chilled sparkling wine

  7. Garnish with a lime wedge (or an elderflower sprig if you have one!)
