Welcome to our Cinco de Mayo celebration! This year, we're bringing you a delicious twist on a classic cocktail with our Non-Alcoholic Passionfruit Margarita Mocktail. Whether you're abstaining from alcohol, sober curious, expecting, or just looking for a vibrant and refreshing drink option, this mocktail is an easy way to have some fun with non-alcoholic spirits. Making a mocktail doesn’t have to be hard, or complicated. In fact, the easier it is, the easier it will be to choose a non-alcoholic option over something boozy. In this case, sometimes only a few ingredients can make a satisfying dupe.

What is Non-Alcoholic Tequila?

Non-alcoholic tequila, like Jalisco, is crafted to capture the essence of traditional tequila without the alcohol content. Made from agave and other natural flavors, it provides the distinctive taste of tequila without the effects of alcohol, making it perfect for mocktails and non-alcoholic cocktails.

Using Spiritless Jalisco Non-Alcoholic Tequila Alternative

I wanted to highlight here that I really love using Spiritless Jalisco tequila dupe in recipes like this because it’s so unique. It’s not like a regular blanco tequila, but has some interesting grassy and smoky notes that pairs really well with tropical fruit. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea in a classic margarita recipe, but it works so well in tropical flavoured margarita mocktails.

Is Non-Alcoholic Tequila Alcohol-Free?

Technically, it cannot be considered alcohol-free as most spirit alternatives use some sort of alcohol in their extraction process. Thus, there are trace levels of alcohol in most products. Legally they must be labelled non-alcoholic, although they may not have any more alcohol in them than a ripe banana!

What is Passionfruit and Where Does It Grow?

I’m really new to passionfruit, so learning all about this delicious fruit has been so fun. It’s also known as maracuya or lilikoi, and it’s a tropical fruit that grows on vines native to South America, particularly Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. It's known for its vibrant flavor, which balances sweetness with a tart tanginess, perfect for adding a tropical twist to cocktails and mocktails.

When is Passionfruit in Season?

Passionfruit is typically in season during the warmer months, with peak harvest times varying depending on the region. In the United States, passionfruit season typically spans from late spring to early fall, making it readily available for Cinco de Mayo celebrations.

Making Homemade Passionfruit Juice vs. Buying It

This non-alcoholic cocktail is a passionfruit margarita but I’m not using fresh fruit (other than as a garnish!). It’s store bought to make it easy. Most cocktail pros would advocate for fresh ingredients, but while homemade passionfruit juice can be delicious, it can also be time-consuming and challenging to find fresh passionfruit depending on where you live. Store-bought passionfruit juice offers convenience without sacrificing flavor, making it a perfect option for this recipe.

Passionfruit Margarita Mocktail Step 1

The magic harmony of this mocktail

The Jalisco Tequila provides a base with its distinct agave flavor, while the passionfruit juice adds a sweet and tangy punch. Lime juice lends a refreshing citrus brightness, balancing the sweetness of the passionfruit. The chili powder adds a subtle kick, awakening the palate with a hint of spice, while the salt enhances the overall flavor profile, creating a well-rounded mocktail experience.

What is Cinco de Mayo and Why Do Americans Celebrate It?

Cinco de Mayo, celebrated on May 5th, commemorates the Mexican Army's victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. While it's a significant day in Mexican history, it's also widely celebrated in the United States as a day to honor Mexican culture and heritage with festivities, parades, and, of course, delicious food and drinks.

Recipe: Non-Alcoholic Passionfruit Margarita Mocktail

Ingredients you will need:

Tequila alternative: I’m using Jalisco tequila blanco here for a smoky flavor, but you can sub in any other brand of zero proof tequila you have on hand

Fresh lime juice. Fresh lime juice is a MUST. Please don’t buy those little green bottles shaped like limes. Buy fresh lime juice, or buy some limes and juice them yourself!

Passionfruit juice - available at every grocery store in the juice aisle, but you could also use this passion fruit puree from Amazon.

Chili powder - this adds a nice soft heat to balance out the tangy passionfruit! It seems too easy but it really works. Nothing fancy here!

Tajin - I always coat my margarita glass rims in tajin. Swap in salt or sugar or a combo if that suits your tastes better. Swipe a lime over half of the upper rim of the glass and sprinkle on the tajin for the least messy application!

Salt - don’t forget a pinch of salt!

Lime wedge for rim and lime wedge for garnish

Preparation:

Step 1: Prepare the Glass

Passionfruit Margarita Mocktail Step 2

Before diving into mixing the mocktail, let's set the stage for an aesthetically pleasing and flavorful experience. Take one of the lime wedges and run it along half the rim of your glass. This step not only adds a decorative touch but also primes your taste buds for the vibrant flavors to come. Sprinkle Tajin, a zesty blend of chili powder, lime, and salt, onto the wetted rim. The Tajin adds a burst of tanginess and spice, perfectly complementing the tropical notes of the mocktail. You can buy Tajin at almost every grocery store nowadays!

Step 2: Mix the Ingredients

Now, let's get mixing! In a cocktail shaker or mason jar filled with ice, combine the Jalisco Non-Alcoholic Tequila, store-bought passionfruit juice, lime juice, chili powder, and a pinch of salt.

Step 3: Shake and Strain

With all the ingredients in the shaker, it's time to shake things up! Secure the lid tightly and shake vigorously for about 10-15 seconds. This step not only chills the ingredients but also allows them to meld together, amplifying the depth of flavor. Once sufficiently shaken, strain the mocktail into a small bodega glass filled with ice. The double strain ensures a smooth and velvety texture, free from any unwanted ice shards or pulp.

Step 4: Top Up if Needed

If you find that there isn't quite enough liquid to fill the glass to your desired level, simply top up the mocktail with a splash of Topo Chico or a lime-based seltzer. The sparkling mineral water adds a refreshing effervescence, elevating the mocktail with a subtle fizziness.

Step 5: Garnish and Serve

No mocktail is complete without a final flourish. Garnish your Non-Alcoholic Passionfruit Margarita Mocktail with a lime wheel. Now it’s ready to be served and enjoyed!
