Autumn alcohol-free sangria, hold the citrus please

A lot of sangria recipes call for orange slices and other citrus fruit, but if you’re not a fan of fresh oranges this can make it unappealing no matter what kind of wine is being used. Fall flavours are a lot more savoury and herbal so the assignment was to make an autumn sangria without the alcohol. This led to the discovery that sangria without too much citrus fruit is very similar to a mulled wine. If you’re ever had the Gruvi Sangria (limited release), you’ll understand what this mean. The cardamom and savoury flavours are more similar to mulled wine. A french woman Camille Vidal once told me this specific combination is exactly the type of sangria she drank as a child in the South of France. So who is going to argue with a French woman who knows her wine?

The approach to this recipe was to find an easy way to make a fall sangria, with an alcohol-free wine and minimal citrus fruit. This turned out to be a fantastic recipe and exactly what we had in mind.

Apple Cider, the quintessential fall flavour

It seemed almost mandatory to use apples and apple cider in a fall sangria, and it ended up being the perfect combination with a major fall vibe. The apple cider added a little bit of sweetness that balances out the bitter notes from the other ingredients.

Non-alcoholic red wine for sangria

A lot of recipe call for white wine for fall sangria, but there really isn’t a hard and fast rule for sangria. This recipe uses a non-alcoholic red wine called Oddbird GSM. We picked this specific bottle because it’s fruit forward and adds a really great juicy body to the sangria.

Adding orange without citrus

One of our secret hacks for a savoury sangria is to use a non-alcoholic Campari dupe and some aromatic bitters. The campari dupe is called Lapos, but you can use Novaro from Bark & Bitter or Wilderton. They are both excellent aperitifs. The addition of a non-alcoholic aperitif adds a bitter orange flavour to the sangria without overly sweetening it. Non-alcoholic wine is already somewhat sweet so you don’t need to add anymore juice.

Using bitters in Sangria

This is another secret hack for an elevated alcohol-free sangria. Using aromatic bitters adds texture and those nice savoury autumn flavours like ginger and cardamom. You can use alcohol-free bitters or regular Angostura bitters, depending on what you’re comfortable with. It makes a big difference to the finished product, trust me.

Letting it rest

Our tip for really letting the flavours infuse into this sangria is to put all of this together in a pitcher and then cover it and pop it into the fridge.

Adding the sparkle

Lucky for us, La Croix now has an orange flavoured sparkling water, and this is actually the perfect option for this recipe. It’s light and zero-sugar, and adds just a hint of citrus along with the bubbles people love in sangria or a tinto de verano.
