Awards-Season Drink: The Hollywood & Vine

This is one of the very first recipes ever published on Some Good Clean Fun, originally published April 24, 2020. Ingredients and non-alcoholic spirit choice has been updated to reflect better options.

Alcohol Free Amaretto Sour Fizz.JPG

This Sunday is the Academy Awards and so I felt compelled to make a non-alcoholic drink that is as glamorous as anything you might find in the hands of an Oscar winner at the Governors Ball. I’m calling this the Hollywood & Vine!

Because it combines almond-syrup with non-alcoholic rum, it has some similarities to the Mai Tai, but adds non-alcoholic sparkling wine to amp up the glamour.

Orgeat or Almond Syrup Makes Your Mocktail

Almond syrup is easy to find if you live near an Italian grocery or any type of international store and adds a delicious, exotic flavour to your drinks. If you’re fancy, you can reach for your Orgeat, as this adds even nicer complexity to the mocktail, and it’s also easy to find online or in specialty cocktail stores. To keep it really simple, you can just add a few dashes of almond extract to some simple syrup for a similar effect.

Non-alcoholic Rum & Mai Tai Mocktails

There are quite a few non-alcoholic rums on the market now, but many of them pack a super spicy punch in order to replicate the burn of alcohol. This recipe uses Lyre’s White Cane Style because it’s softer and has less of a bite than other brands. Fluere Spiced Cane Blend was originally used, and would also be fine in this recipe, but not as tropical as the Lyre’s. If you don’t have access to non-alcoholic rum, you can use apple juice and a splash of ACV.

Ingredients

This alcohol-free cocktail recipe has only five easy ingredients:

1 oz. almond syrup
1.5 oz. Lyre’s White Cane Style non-alcoholic rum
1/2 oz lime juice
1 tbsp of liquid egg white or aquafaba
Club Soda

Preparation

Add the first four ingredients to a shaker, and then drop in 2-3 ice cubes. Shake vigorously for 15 seconds - don’t skip out on this step, you need the egg white or aquafaba to froth. Wrap the top of the shaker with a towel to minimize any spray if you’re using a standard cocktail shaker (not needed for a Boston shaker).

Strain into a coupe glass and top up with club soda.

Replacement for non-alcoholic rum

To replace the non-alcoholic rum, you can use a combination of coconut water or apple juice and about 1/4 tsp of Apple Cider Vinegar.

So, put on your Oscar dress and make a double batch of this baby and settle in for a night of glamour!

Cheers!
